چکیده

In order to prove the validity of the'salivary gland endocrine theory' proposed by Dr. T. Ogata(Tokyo University)la), the author and his collaborators have engaged in this study for approximately 15 years. In 1944, the author and his associates succeeded in isolating a crude protein from the bovine parotid gland which remarkably promoted the calcification of teeth and reduced the calcium level in serum. This protein was named'parotin'by Drs. T. Ogata, A. Ogata, and the author1b). Later in 1949, this crude parotin was purified to be electrophoretically homogeneous2). Since 1951, studies have been made by the consolidated research group, organized on the Grant in aid for Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education from various angles to determine if this protein is the salivary gland hormone itself3). So far, it has been proved morphologically and biochemically by many scholars that this parotin possesses specific action of promoting the growth of hard tissues, such as teeth and bones. This action is, according to the salivary gland endocrine theory, the main action of the hormone. It has also been found that parotin, when it is given to normal animals, causes experimental hypersialadenism(symptoms due to hyperfunction of the salivary glands). When it is given to animals which show asialadenism(symptoms due to salivary glands ectomization), it compensates the defficiency symptoms in both hard tissue and in many functions of the parotid gland hormone which have been discovered recently. This paper is a general review of the study of parotin made by the research

Studies on the physiological chemistry of the salivary glands. XLIII. On the functional correlation between salivary glands and other endocrine organs. I. Preliminary studies on the correlation between salivary glands and thyroid gland of rats.

It has been reported that the decrease in weight of the submaxillary gland and the atrophy of the serous tubules were observed in thyroidectomized rat and these changes were recovered with the administration of thyroxine (Leblond et al., 1948), the administration of thiourea caused the atrophy of the tubular part of the submaxillary gland in rat and this response was probably due to the diminut...

Radioiodine therapy effects on salivary gland function in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer [Persian]

Salivary gland involvement is one of the radioiodine therapy complications. Salivary gland scintigraphy in quantitative mode can accurately evaluate salivary gland function. Methods: Salivary gland scintigraphy was performed with Tc-99m Pertechnetate, at the time of iodine therapy as a basic study and then 3 weeks and 3 months afterwards. Ejection Fraction (EF) of parotid and submandibula...

Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors: Lessons Learned from Breast Cancer

Malignant salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) account for 2-6% of all head and neck cancers. Despite the rarity, MSGTs have been of great interest due to a wide variety of pathological features and high metastasis rates resulting in poor prognosis. Surgical resection followed by radiation therapy represents the main treatment of this malignancy. Adjuvant therapy is reserved for the management of loca...

Anatomic Pathology / SEX HORMONE RECEPTORS IN SALIVARY GLAND TUMORS Expression of Androgen, Estrogen, and Progesterone Receptors in Salivary Gland Tumors Frequent Expression of Androgen Receptor in a Subset of Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors

The expression of sex hormone receptors in some tumors suggests a role for these receptors in tumor pathogenesis and therapy. Previous studies of the expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors in salivary gland tumors have reported conflicting results. We evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of androgen, estrogen, and progesterone receptors (AR, ER, and PR) in a series of 78 form...
